May Update

By | 2015-04-29T22:17:46+00:00 April 29th, 2015|Update|

Last summer when I became the director here at Love INC Newberg, the Lord gave me a word – sustainability. This word came up in times of listening, prayer, in times of reading the scripture, in conversations with friends and in all sorts of other ways.  I couldn’t ignore it. It was as if God was saying, “Jodi, make sure you learn the ropes at Love INC through the lens of what is sustainable.”  I didn’t know what that meant exactly, but it was something I knew I was supposed to pay attention to and act upon. Lately, this word is coming up again, but in a slightly different way. I was recently reading a book about sustainable leadership and it occurred to me to ask, “So what makes the Church of Jesus Christ sustainable?”  I mean the church has lasted now for over 2,000 years stretching onto every continent of this planet and impacting culture in every corner of the earth.  How did a tiny little band of social outcasts, fishermen and a few undercover elite numbering about 1,000 on the day of ascension become a 2 billion person force for goodness in the world? The answer… discipleship! Think about it; if Jesus had lived a long life, say into his 70’s, and spent his days healing the sick, casting out demons and teaching about the coming Kingdom all by himself it is likely that the whole enterprise would have died with him.  But, Jesus knew that the best [...]

Servant Update: Emily

By | 2015-04-29T06:18:44+00:00 April 29th, 2015|Servant Update|

Former Love INC intern Emily has been living out her faith in an extraordinary way. In 2013, she graduated from George Fox University with degrees in Social Work and Christian Ministries. Since then, she has put her faith and passions to work in Cambodia. Emily works at Mother’s Heart, a crisis pregnancy center, caring for women going through difficult situations. Love INC was blessed to serve with her while she was a student, and is excited to see how God will continue to use her to advance His kingdom. “Servant Update” is a series about former volunteers and interns from Love INC Newberg. “Jesus called the Twelve and said, ‘Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all. […] Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.” –Mark 9:35, 37

Strength to Bless

By | 2015-04-22T06:14:34+00:00 April 22nd, 2015|Relational Ministry|

“Felicia,” a Relational Ministry client, is a student at the University of Portland and didn’t have access to a computer. She spends four hours on public transportation in order to get to and from school. Because she didn’t have a computer, she then had to spend hours in the library at George Fox University to do homework. This situation is less than ideal for a busy student with a challenging workload. Another Relational Ministry client, “Carmen,” was able to see how a personal tragedy could be used to help others. Carmen’s daughter recently passed away, leaving behind a computer. Carmen decided to bless Felicia by giving it to her. It’s amazing to see how God can give the strength to help others even in the midst of difficult times! “Seek the Lord and his strength; seeks his presence continually!” –1 Chronicles 16:11

Servant Update: Ashley

By | 2015-04-15T21:13:49+00:00 April 15th, 2015|Servant Update|

Some time ago, a young woman came to Love INC needing resources to help her learn how to best take care of her autistic son. Ashley, an intern at the time, was there to help. “We were able to bring peace to her life that she didn’t know was available,” she said. While helping the woman take linens and food to her car, Ashley was surprised when the woman started crying. She gave Ashley a tight hug and thanked her, saying, “You have given me so much hope and peace and I am grateful for this place.” Ashley saw this moment as an “incredible testament to what Love INC is all about,” and felt blessed to be a part of it. She graduated from George Fox University in 2014 with a degree in Social Work. She is currently helping her church create an intake process for The Heart of the City, the new community center of Wilsonville. She will become a leader and trainer to those who want to become intake specialists there. Of her internship experience, she said, “Love INC gave me a sense of what it means to work with a vulnerable population and gave me a compassion for that population that I never thought I would have.” Her time at Love INC introduced her to the tools to start a community center in her own town, bringing hope to those living in poverty locally. “God has given me a passion for community development and I am seeing [...]

A Word about God’s Word

By | 2015-04-08T21:34:31+00:00 April 8th, 2015|Relational Ministry|

As a Christian, one of the best ways to grow in relationship with God is to read His Word. Even though most Christians know this, it can still be a challenge to pick up the Bible and spend time listening to what God is saying through it. There is a constant need for encouragement to spend time in the Scripture. “Jennifer,” a Relational Ministry participant, shared that she has started reading her Bible, beginning in Matthew. She said it is a rewarding experience but she also finds it to be confusing at times. Other participants were encouraged by her dedication to spiritual growth despite the challenges, and they appreciated her honesty about it being a difficult task. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” -2 Timothy 3:16-17

Sharing the Gospel

By | 2015-04-01T17:58:02+00:00 April 1st, 2015|Relational Ministry|

“Amanda” recently experienced a situation in which God took something bad and used it for good. She had been waiting to hear back results from her doctor, fearing she was going to be diagnosed with cancer. During this time, Amanda was given the chance to share the Gospel with her neighbor, a young single mom. It had started as a texting conversation but led to meeting at her apartment and talking about Christ together. Amanda will be giving a Bible to her friend so that she can begin her faith journey. “Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” –Romans 10:9
