Dear Love INC Community,

As a child, the back to school season was so exciting for me. I got a couple of new school outfits, maybe a new backpack and of course all those new supplies.  On that first day of a new grade, new teachers and new classmates were exhilarating!  I loved school as a child and deeply enjoy learning to this day.

When I became a mom, back to school advertisements were a wonderful sign that the fun but highly chaotic pace of summer would soon be replaced by the peace and consistency of school year routines.  When our boys were in elementary school those routines were incredibly anchoring for our family. Sunday evenings were spent prepping lunches and planning for the week.  Each weeknight was spent helping our two boys memorize spelling words, complete math assignments and making sure they were ready for Friday’s quizzes.

It was comforting watching our boys add to their knowledge week by week by week while enjoying the predictability of our schedules.  Over the years, the disciplines learned in those early years of education served our grown sons well.  They are both avid adult learners who love to discuss ways our family can make this world a better place for others.

Reminiscing about back to school seasons of the past got me thinking that maybe Back to School 2015 is a good time for the staff and me to introduce the Love INC community to some new routines that have the power to transform the world. Investing your gifts, skills and experience into the mission of Love INC Newberg to mobilize the Church to transform lives and our communities In the Name of Christ has incredible impact that can change our community over time. If God is nudging you to begin a new discipline of serving this school year, we have numerous options in which to put your talents to work! We hope that at least one of these programs will inspire you to invest your resources in ways that produce a valuable return.

Would you like to serve on a team providing school supplies to local elementary students? These teams will work collaboratively with school counselors to ensure the campus cupboards have the right supplies for teachers to give to students in need. This is a powerful way for the people of God to help change the odds for students at risk and will require only a couple of hours a month of your time. 08-ShelterShelter Hosting

The Newberg Community Shelter is a place of turning scars into stars! The women we serve are on a healing journey toward sustainable self-sufficiency and monthly hosts are an important part of helping these women see a new way forward. Hosts spend one night each month in conversation around the dinner table with our guests (dinner is provided), playing games or reading and then retiring to the private bed and bath suite for a good night’s sleep! Training is provided and assistance is just a phone call away. Click here to become a host.

08-DonateMonthly Financial Support of Love INC Newberg

Maybe you have donated to Love INC here and there. Maybe you are already a monthly donor but have been thinking about increasing your regular support of the ministry. Either way, the need for financial support is always a challenge for us. Unlike most local non-profits, our mission is to mobilize the Church to do the work of ministry instead of investing a lot of time into applying for grants and hiring professionals to do the work of ministry. This means we are dependent on God’s people each and every month to provide. We work very hard to stretch your donations as far as possible and consistently show an ability to turn every dollar donated into $10 of life changing goods and services. You can set up a monthly donation through your online banking Bill Pay Program or click here to use Pay Pal to set up a monthly donation. Consistent financial support is a very important part of sustaining this holy work for years to come.

Reflecting on this season of transition from summer to school year and the opportunity it brings to establish new routines and disciplines, reminds us of the Parable of the Talents found in the gospel of Matthew. Jesus gave this admonition to use our talents to build the Kingdom of Heaven as he was approaching the end of his time here on earth. The staff and I leave you with this familiar passage of scripture and hope it inspires you to consider how you might participate in the Kingdom as you approach this fall season.

“Again, it
[Kingdom] will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.
After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’ His master replied, ’Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ The man with the two talents also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.’ His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
Then the man who had received the one talent came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’ His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
‘Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’”
Matthew 25:14–30 NIV
