Blossoming Friendship

By | August 6th, 2014|Medical/Dental Clinic|

Old friends reunited at one of our dental clinics this month and their friendship blossomed all over again. Joyce was working as the receptionist, checking in and directing clients, when she noticed a familiar face show up for a dental appointment. Low and behold, it was a former classmate of hers! After catching up for a few minutes, they agreed to meet for lunch sometime later in the week. When the two finally met, Joyce was given a beautiful flower arrangement that her friend had put together from her garden. Joyce was so blessed by her friend’s gesture that she shared a picture of the bouquet.  “Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.”- Romans 12:10

The Immaculate Donation

By | July 30th, 2014|Clearinghouse|

Cara Copeland, Director of A Family Place, recently met with Love INC Director Polly Siler to discuss her organizations’ programs and brainstorm ways a partnership could be mutually beneficial. At one point in the meeting Cara mentioned that their organization was in need of a washer and dryer for their new preschool starting up at Joyful Servant Lutheran Church. The Clearinghouse Coordinator overheard this from another room and quickly interrupted the meeting to share that he had spoken with a gentlemen earlier on the phone who wished to donate a washer and dryer. Large appliance donations like this are a rarity at Love INC, so this donation was immediately received with praise and thanksgiving.  God knew when He placed it on the donor’s heart to donate the washer and dryer that Cara would be sharing her organization’s need that same day. The Lord never ceases to amaze with His timely provision. “Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether.”-Psalm 139:4

The Narrow and the “Wyld” Way

By | July 23rd, 2014|Gap Ministries|

Recently, a group of approximately twelve middle school students from Newberg Wyldlife (a Young Life program) spent three weekends helping their community.  With informational flyers and huge red bins in hand, the students visited neighborhoods on the north side of Newberg, collecting various kitchen items as they went door-to-door. All in all, they were able to fill two and a half bins in just a couple of hours!  The community response was so positive that Love INC even received phone calls the following week from people wanting to donate more items because of their interaction with the Wyldlife kids. Love INC and 2nd Street Church would like to extend a special thank you to Newberg Wyldlife for their service; it will go a long way in blessing members of our community. “And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:2-4 ESV)

Just a Hunch

By | July 16th, 2014|Relational Ministry|

Not a week goes by in the clearinghouse where we aren’t surprised by at least one instance of God’s perfect timing with meeting one of our clients’ needs. Late in April, an older gentlemen named Larry dropped off a really nice desktop computer, complete with a printer, keyboard, and mouse. Love INC usually does not except electronic device donations but we had a suspicion that someone in our Relational Ministry program would be needing one and gratefully accepted it. Later that week, as the Clearinghouse Coordinator and Director read through the mentor reports, they stumbled upon an interesting comment; a client was in dire need of a new computer. Melinda’s computer had recently broken; without it, her four children would have a difficult time doing school work. We immediately contacted Melinda, and her family picked up the computer the following week. That hunch had been proven to be God’s direction so that this family could be blessed. Who else could have orchestrated such an opportune moment? “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”- Isaiah 55:9

A Hot Day of Service

By | July 9th, 2014|Shelter|

On Tuesday, June 24th 20-25 members from the Church of the Nazarene did a multitude of projects for Love INC and clients. The first major assignment they were tasked with accomplishing was the painting of the upstairs bedrooms and bathroom at the women’s shelter. A throng of people were able to apply several fresh coats of paint in just a few hours! A second group, comprised mostly of strong men, braved the muggy heat in order to erect a brand new fence between the clearinghouse and shelter. About a month earlier the fence had collapsed due to dry rot and years of wear and tear. The last group made various dump runs for clients throughout the community, a huge blessing to all involved.  Many clients seized the opportunity to have volunteers help them clean out their cluttered garages. Because of Church of the Nazarene’s service, Love INC and several homes in Newberg are now more hospitable destinations! “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”- Galatians 6:10

A Golden Surprise

By | July 2nd, 2014|Medical/Dental Clinic|

It was a long day for our Ministry Coordinator, Michele.  She had been making numerous phone calls to various hospitals in order to schedule a doctor’s visit for one of our sick shelter guests.  As soon as she was done, she rushed off to an appointment of her own at her Dentist’s office. She had been having some pain around one of her gold crowns. While visiting with her Dentist, Michele asked him what they did with gold teeth dental scrap; to her surprise, he reported that for the past several years they had been selling them to a refiner and donating that money to Love INC.  Michele was thrilled to tell them she worked for Love INC and expressed her gratitude for their faithful contributions. “Truly, I love your commands more than gold, even the finest gold.”- Psalm 119:127

Finishing Strong

By | June 25th, 2014|Gap Ministries|

Since October of last year, many children have enrolled in the Friday Food Bag Program hosted by the First United Methodist Church and Newberg Christian.  These families need supplemental meals each weekend when food stamps can’t cover their grocery bills. Thanks to the two nearby partner churches, the food bag contents had always been in ample supply throughout the course of the year. A few weeks back we heard the program was running out of peanut butter with just two weeks remaining to give until school got out for summer.  The Love INC staff and volunteers prayed that the Lord would provide in ways we could not imagine. Shortly after the prayer, we were notified by our Ministry Coordinator that First Federal Grants Committee had determined to make a $2,000 contribution to the Friday Food Bag program! We are so grateful that God has continued to answer our prayers so powerfully.  There will be enough peanut butter to finish the program strong this year! "And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him." 1 John 5:14-15

The Tangible Gospel

By | June 23rd, 2014|Clearinghouse|

A volunteer with a heart for discipling young men does serve projects for Love INC once a month.  He hopes to be a father-figure for those whose fathers are either absent or inactive in their lives. Last month, the volunteer shared that he and a teenage boy worked on taking down the old shed behind the clearinghouse.  As the boy lamented about the heaviness of the boards they were hauling off, Dave took the opportunity to share the significance behind the crucifixion.  He explained that Jesus carried the very cross he would later die on so that men might be saved from their sins. He elucidated further that Christ commands all of his followers to pick up their symbolic cross and follow Him, dying daily to self in service to God. The boy was deeply impacted by this truth and Dave felt incredibly blessed to be able to speak the gospel so effortlessly and tangibly into a young boy’s life.  Neither knew that such a mundane task would point them to the greatest event in human history! “And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”- Mark 8:34

Crossing Paths

By | June 18th, 2014|Relational Ministry|

Fewer things bring greater joy to Love INC than an announcement that one our clients have gained employment. It is especially exciting when the events surrounding the good news are the direct result of a special relationship the client has formed with one of our volunteers. Recently our Tuesday intake volunteer, Nicole, was making her way through the office when she noticed her former Relational Ministry mentee, “Audrey,” redeeming an incentive voucher at the reception desk. It had been a while since they had connected with one another and before too many words could be shared, “Audrey” gleefully proclaimed that she had got a job at a nearby retail store. Several months earlier, Audrey and Nicole had walked through the job searching and application process for this very job in Relational Ministry classes! Now they were crossing paths and enjoying the answer to a prayer they offered together many months ago. “Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!”- Psalm 90:17

God’s Love is Over-Generous

By | June 11th, 2014|Shelter|

Becky, from Family Life Church, wanted to help the women’s shelter after being involved with the church’s annual Big Give. The Big Give is an event that encourages church members to practice overgenerous giving as a community. As a consultant for Thirty One, Becky decided that she could be a blessing through the services her company provided. She and seven of her clients each sponsored a guest at the shelter by giving them an Easter themed tote bag. Contents included: Easter chocolates, coffee gift cards, personal hygiene items, and much more. The shelter guests were truly touched by Becky’s kind gesture; it came as a friendly reminder that God’s love is overgenerous. “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”- 2 Corinthians 9:7
