A Steadfast Commitment

By | May 28th, 2014|Gap Ministries|

In the fall of last year, Polly, Love INC Executive Director, spoke at Family Life Church and called the church members there to action, inviting them to participate with Love INC in any of our various ministries. At the time, she had no idea who would answer the call. This month we would like to publicly acknowledge one man who responded six months ago and has faithfully served behind the scenes every Thursday since as Love INC’s GAP delivery person. We are incredibly grateful for Bill Meyers’ helping hand. Bill can be seen every Thursday running various errands for Love INC.  He completes tasks like delivering donated items to our GAP ministry locations, picking up essential products for our clearinghouse or shelter, and shuttling food from Newberg Christian Church’s community dinner to our women’s shelter. Bill has become an integral part of the function of the clearinghouse and continues to bless us with his steadfast commitment. “And sitting down, He called the twelve and said to them, "If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all, and servant of all."- Mark 9:35

Community Rewards Producing Cash!

By | May 21st, 2014|Clearinghouse|

In January Love INC was invited to take part in the Community Rewards Program of Fred Meyer, presented by the Kroger Family of Stores. In this unique program, Fred Meyer grants their shoppers the opportunity to link their rewards card to a charitable organization of their choice and in return Fred Meyer donates according to the number of rewards points shoppers earn.  It doesn’t affect their personal rewards points, either! The first quarter of the program finished at the end of March and we were notified that 114 community members had linked their cards to Love INC, generating a donation of $1,917.82! Many of those people were our very own clients, who were quick to sign up when they first found out about the program.  Please continue to join our clients in this effort so that we can further bless those in the Newberg area who have need.

Celebration of Friendship

By | May 14th, 2014|Clearinghouse|

Over the past few months one of our weekly volunteers has been working with an elderly client, who we shall call Betty. She was in need of new housing, and had no family or friends in the area who were able to help her. The process was long and difficult at times but Love INC remained in contact with Betty throughout the series of challenges, including finding a foster home for some of her beloved dogs. God impressed upon a volunteer that she needed to stay in touch with Betty and always be there to love, listen and help when possible. Recently Betty was able to move about two hours away to a lovely apartment in a quiet town. Our volunteer drove out to visit Betty to make sure she was settled in and had everything she needed to be comfortable. Their conversation lasted a couple of hours and ended with hanging colorful pictures on the wall to celebrate a long-awaited move and commemorate a friendship that was built through the Love INC ministry. “Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart.”- 1 Peter 1:22

New Creations

By | May 12th, 2014|Shelter|

If you were to venture into the women’s shelter you would now discover that the living room area looks like a new creation. That’s because New Creations Intl., a furniture company whose owners live in Newberg, re-designed the room by providing a high-quality set of furniture including a leather couch, love seat, chair, and ottoman. The easy to clean and fresh smelling collection is unlike anything the shelter has ever had available for our clients and hosts. Thanks to New Creations, the primary living space for our shelter guests is now the most comfortable, relaxing room in the house.  It’s a place where friends can enjoy each other’s company with fun-filled activities or conversation. “My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.” – Isaiah 32:18

A Timely Gift

By | May 7th, 2014|Gap Ministries|

Every month Love INC sends out a Monthly Update highlighting our ministries’ biggest needs, both for the clearinghouse and for our GAP programs. People from all over the community always respond with generosity, but every so often we are surprised by an extra special donation. Frank Slyter, manager at the Hillsboro Costco, read our update, noticed we needed jeans and khaki pants for men.  He asked his male coworkers if they had any to spare, and within a few days dropped off a dozen pairs of assorted men’s pants.  His gift could not have been any timelier, as we have had several new homeless men become clients who were in dire need of clothing. “Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? ‘And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” Matthew 25:37-40

Labor of Love

By | April 30th, 2014|Clearinghouse|

Sam Holst from Midget Motors, who is a small & large 4-cycle equipment guru, fixed Love INC’s lawn mower for free earlier this month. Not only did he volunteer to provide this service, but he took his efforts to another level by offering to keep it in storage for us while it’s not in use, free of charge! Thanks to Sam and Midget Motors, Love INC’s lawnmower will be fully operational for the spring and summer months.  This ensures that the yards of Love INC clients will be kept well-manicured and their owners well pleased! “Let him who steals steal no longer; but rather let him labor, performing with his own hands what is good, in order that he may have [something] to share with him who has need.” Ephesians 4:28

Perfection in Threes

By | April 28th, 2014|Medical/Dental Clinic|

God loves the number three. There is one God who exists eternally in three persons (the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit); God's attributes are three: omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence; Jesus rose from the grave on the third day; during his ministry Jesus raised three persons from the dead; Jesus fulfilled the three offices of Prophet, Priest, and King (Deut 177:15, 18:3-5, and 18:15). Throughout the Bible the number three is repeatedly mentioned and most Biblical scholars have concluded it symbolizes perfection or completion. Love INC’s dental clinic continues to be a work in progress, constantly adapting and changing in an attempt to meet our community’s ongoing healthcare needs. Perfection is the goal, and three recent grants (two of which were valued at $3,000) are bringing the dental clinic ministry full-circle. Thanks to the Spencer Family Foundation, Providence Hospital, and Safeway the dental clinic now sports a brand-new sink and additional dental equipment needed to complete our patient’s dental work. “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Matthew 5:48

New Furnace and Water Heater in the Shelter

By | April 23rd, 2014|Shelter|

The water heater and furnace at the women’s shelter became a much talked about issue throughout winter. With up to 10 shelter guests cooped up inside the house, every clunky noise made or hot shower cut short left the ladies a little cranky at times. And the higher energy bills weren’t gladly welcomed by the staff either. Love INC knew it was time to consider replacing the ancient and ineffective appliances, but where would the funds come from? Last month Love INC was notified that the City of Newberg, having recently received funds from NAHTF (National Affordable Housing Trust), would be listening to a series of proposals from local non-profits for development projects. The Early Bird Rotary Club of Newberg was also dispersing funds for community projects for those interested. Love INC quickly jumped at the opportunity, pitched the replacement of the water heater/furnace at the shelter, and left the rest up to God. We soon learned that we were the proud recipients of both funds! Having heard our cry for new appliances, God then answered our prayers with Hampton Plumbing to install our newly purchased water heater and a crew from Vanguard Electric and Husky Heating to set up the furnace. Thanks to their time and labor, the shelter now has new, energy efficient products that will save us money! “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”- Philippians 4:19

New Home

By | April 22nd, 2014|Relational Ministry|

Maria, a participant of Relational Ministry, and her family were living in government apartments last year when they applied for a Habitat for Humanity house, along with 25 other families. In February of 2013 they got the news that they had been selected to receive the Habitat house! Habitat for Humanity focuses on low-income residents, and it requires that families contribute 500 hours of “sweat equity” to build their house. For the past year, Maria and her children have worked on the entire house. Although Maria cannot lift heavy things, she spent three months cleaning and helping where she could. Saturday, March 15th was the last work day, and the following Sunday they hosted a housewarming dinner with all of the people from Habitat and the people who helped them work on the house. They moved into their new home the following week. “As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock.” Luke 6:47-48 *photo courtesy of Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity

Community Breakfast at the Shelter

By | April 16th, 2014|Shelter|

A small group from Newberg Foursquare Church has decided to begin hosting a breakfast banquet for guests staying at the women’s shelter every second Saturday of the month. The first, which took place earlier this month, happened during the tail end of the great snowstorm of 2014. After enjoying a community snowball fight, members of the small group were able to enjoy good conversation and delicious food with the shelter ladies around NFC’s cozy fireplace. A charitable gathering such as this is an excellent way for Christians to step out and reach their community with the love of Christ. “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”- Hebrews 13:16
