Servant Update: Trisha

By | June 3rd, 2015|Servant Update|

Trisha Fey Lazo Elizarde-Miller currently works as a skills trainer with Trillium Family Services at a day treatment program. She works with 5th-6th grade kids who have various behavioral health issues. She is also a member of the Portland Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines. At Love INC, Trisha loved being a part of Relational Ministry. She said, “My experience at Love INC helped me realize that I love mentoring others as well as coordinating resources and events. It was a good mix for me to utilize my strengths of coordination and active listening… The feedback and support I received from my supervisors helped me realize my strengths in active listening and advocacy.” She hopes to one day work in a higher education setting to utilize her strengths as an organizer and empathizer to advocate for the needs of underrepresented students, specifically Filipino American youth. She said, “I see God teaching me the importance of our complex identities and how God is manifested through them. For example, I am fighting against colonial mentality and embracing my identity as a Filipina American. When we embrace who we are, we see the beauty and uniqueness of God’s creation.” “Servant Update” is a series about former student volunteers and interns from Love INC. “Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!” –Psalm 34:3

Servant Update: Kendyl

By | May 20th, 2015|Servant Update|

After graduating from George Fox University (GFU) with a degree in Organizational Communications, Kendyl Shambaugh started working at Nike as a part-time temporary Guest Services Representative. Little did she know this “temporary” job would lead to long-term employment. Six months later, she was hired full-time as a Senior Guest Services Representative. A year passed, and she moved onto Nike Skateboarding where she supported the Senior Director of Sales and Director of Global Operations. Another year later, she was transitioned into another job supporting the VP of Sales and Senior Director of Merchandising. She is currently working on an assignment in Talent Acquisition (Recruiting) and is a Project Manager for Talent Acquisition’s Operation and Innovation team. Kendyl said, “This month will mark my third year at Nike as a full-time employee! It has been a pleasure to have so many opportunities at this company.” Her time at Love INC helped her realize how much she enjoyed investing in people. “It played to my strengths of project management, event planning, and organizational/administrative work. I was able to utilize work experience and skill sets I gained from Love INC to get my first part-time role at Nike,” she said. “I learned a lot about what it takes to manage something from start to finish and that one person can make a significant difference,” she added. God has been molding her and challenging her every day, and she recognizes the growth she has experienced through it all. “He’s done some amazing things through the [...]

Servant Update: Tori

By | May 6th, 2015|Servant Update|

Many students who volunteer or intern at Love INC do projects that directly relate to their majors. Tori does not fit that generalization. She volunteered for four years, then graduated from George Fox University with a double degree in English (concentration in creative writing) and Spanish. It was special for her to work alongside other students. “It was amazingly gratifying to know that so many of my peers were working together towards such a great purpose,” she said. She currently has a virtual internship with a small publishing company, where she edits mostly non-fiction manuscripts. While others might find the work dull, she loves “critiquing grammar and writing style, and helping authors create the best work they can.” Her dream is to do similar work but in a physical office. “Love INC constantly challenged me spiritually by showing me the personal side of poverty,” she said. “I had read that Jesus comforted and loved the poor, but I had never developed relationships with people who were truly in need. It wasn’t until I helped single mothers get free diapers, and homeless men get hot meals, that I began to understand how marginalized we have made them, and how human they actually are.” Tori has a passion in her heart for others because of her time at Love INC. She shows that it isn’t necessary to have a job as a social worker to make a difference. “Servant Update” is a series about former volunteers and interns from Love INC Newberg. [...]

Servant Update: Emily

By | April 29th, 2015|Servant Update|

Former Love INC intern Emily has been living out her faith in an extraordinary way. In 2013, she graduated from George Fox University with degrees in Social Work and Christian Ministries. Since then, she has put her faith and passions to work in Cambodia. Emily works at Mother’s Heart, a crisis pregnancy center, caring for women going through difficult situations. Love INC was blessed to serve with her while she was a student, and is excited to see how God will continue to use her to advance His kingdom. “Servant Update” is a series about former volunteers and interns from Love INC Newberg. “Jesus called the Twelve and said, ‘Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all. […] Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.” –Mark 9:35, 37

Servant Update: Ashley

By | April 15th, 2015|Servant Update|

Some time ago, a young woman came to Love INC needing resources to help her learn how to best take care of her autistic son. Ashley, an intern at the time, was there to help. “We were able to bring peace to her life that she didn’t know was available,” she said. While helping the woman take linens and food to her car, Ashley was surprised when the woman started crying. She gave Ashley a tight hug and thanked her, saying, “You have given me so much hope and peace and I am grateful for this place.” Ashley saw this moment as an “incredible testament to what Love INC is all about,” and felt blessed to be a part of it. She graduated from George Fox University in 2014 with a degree in Social Work. She is currently helping her church create an intake process for The Heart of the City, the new community center of Wilsonville. She will become a leader and trainer to those who want to become intake specialists there. Of her internship experience, she said, “Love INC gave me a sense of what it means to work with a vulnerable population and gave me a compassion for that population that I never thought I would have.” Her time at Love INC introduced her to the tools to start a community center in her own town, bringing hope to those living in poverty locally. “God has given me a passion for community development and I am seeing [...]
