Strength to Bless

By | April 22nd, 2015|Relational Ministry|

“Felicia,” a Relational Ministry client, is a student at the University of Portland and didn’t have access to a computer. She spends four hours on public transportation in order to get to and from school. Because she didn’t have a computer, she then had to spend hours in the library at George Fox University to do homework. This situation is less than ideal for a busy student with a challenging workload. Another Relational Ministry client, “Carmen,” was able to see how a personal tragedy could be used to help others. Carmen’s daughter recently passed away, leaving behind a computer. Carmen decided to bless Felicia by giving it to her. It’s amazing to see how God can give the strength to help others even in the midst of difficult times! “Seek the Lord and his strength; seeks his presence continually!” –1 Chronicles 16:11

Servant Update: Ashley

By | April 15th, 2015|Servant Update|

Some time ago, a young woman came to Love INC needing resources to help her learn how to best take care of her autistic son. Ashley, an intern at the time, was there to help. “We were able to bring peace to her life that she didn’t know was available,” she said. While helping the woman take linens and food to her car, Ashley was surprised when the woman started crying. She gave Ashley a tight hug and thanked her, saying, “You have given me so much hope and peace and I am grateful for this place.” Ashley saw this moment as an “incredible testament to what Love INC is all about,” and felt blessed to be a part of it. She graduated from George Fox University in 2014 with a degree in Social Work. She is currently helping her church create an intake process for The Heart of the City, the new community center of Wilsonville. She will become a leader and trainer to those who want to become intake specialists there. Of her internship experience, she said, “Love INC gave me a sense of what it means to work with a vulnerable population and gave me a compassion for that population that I never thought I would have.” Her time at Love INC introduced her to the tools to start a community center in her own town, bringing hope to those living in poverty locally. “God has given me a passion for community development and I am seeing [...]

A Word about God’s Word

By | April 8th, 2015|Relational Ministry|

As a Christian, one of the best ways to grow in relationship with God is to read His Word. Even though most Christians know this, it can still be a challenge to pick up the Bible and spend time listening to what God is saying through it. There is a constant need for encouragement to spend time in the Scripture. “Jennifer,” a Relational Ministry participant, shared that she has started reading her Bible, beginning in Matthew. She said it is a rewarding experience but she also finds it to be confusing at times. Other participants were encouraged by her dedication to spiritual growth despite the challenges, and they appreciated her honesty about it being a difficult task. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” -2 Timothy 3:16-17

Sharing the Gospel

By | April 1st, 2015|Relational Ministry|

“Amanda” recently experienced a situation in which God took something bad and used it for good. She had been waiting to hear back results from her doctor, fearing she was going to be diagnosed with cancer. During this time, Amanda was given the chance to share the Gospel with her neighbor, a young single mom. It had started as a texting conversation but led to meeting at her apartment and talking about Christ together. Amanda will be giving a Bible to her friend so that she can begin her faith journey. “Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” –Romans 10:9

Moving Forward

By | March 25th, 2015|Shelter|

“Linda,” a guest at the women’s shelter, has been volunteering for two years at a childhood education program. Although it was a wonderful experience for her, she desired a stable income. Recently, a woman at her church connected her with a new job—a paid position at a daycare. “I finally found something that’s a paying job so I can start saving my money towards getting my own place,” Linda said, bubbling with happiness. “I’m supposed to be getting another job at [a local hotel] as a housekeeper, too!” She says she really likes her new job since it is exactly what she wants to do. She is benefiting greatly from this new role—it has provided renewed joy and purpose as well as financial stability. “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.” –Psalm 84:11

A Student’s Stress & a Client’s Care

By | March 18th, 2015|Medical/Dental Clinic|

Once again, God has shown his great care and provision! A Love INC client who received treatment at a dental clinic has agreed to be a board patient for a dental student at Chemeketa Community College. Dental students must perform specific tasks on a board patient under the supervision of several board examiners. As stressful as that already is, it can be an even greater stress to find willing patients. This student was incredibly blessed to find a patient so easily—the less stress, the better! The Love INC client gets to receive free preventive care while earning a stipend. This is such a great opportunity for both student and patient! “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” -1 Peter 5:7

An Eight-Foot Fall

By | March 11th, 2015|Clearinghouse|

Former Relational Ministry participant Edward Spanner didn’t know January 29 would be such a memorable day. If anything, he thought it would only be remembered as a simple fishing trip with a good friend. Instead, January 29 was a day of fear and praise. FEAR The two friends were enjoying an uneventful time of fishing when Edward decided he wanted to get closer to the ocean. Despite knowing he wasn’t really supposed to, he crawled out onto a jetty in Yaquina Bay, leaving his friend about 10 yards behind. He went to cast his line but lost his balance. He fell eight feet and landed on the rocks at the water line. Everything was hurting. “I really thought I was going to die,” Edward said. “I yelled loud enough for Ryan to hear me and told him I couldn’t move.” Consciousness was fading and shock was setting in. “Ryan told me I had turned white as mayonnaise,” Edward said. He couldn’t remember if he had hit his head but his neck was definitely hurting. Ryan kept Edward awake as they waited for help to come. The paramedics came but couldn’t get Edward up. “All I could say was, ‘Oh God help me. Oh God help me,’” Edward said. The medics were able to get him on a board, but they couldn’t get him off the rocks. They called the U.S. Coast Guard. Edward said, “Anthony, a medic, was like an angel. He stayed with me and kept telling me, ‘You’re gonna be okay.’” His blood pressure was practically nonexistent [...]

Overabundant Deliveries

By | March 4th, 2015|Gap Ministries|

Medical Teams International (MTI) recently delivered toilet paper to Love INC—enough to fill one of their SUVs! St. Peter’s giving tree also contributed toilet paper, paper towels, PGE cards, gas cards, etc. The clearinghouse garage was overflowing with each visit from them! These donations go to the non-food pantry and the shelter. Love INC is happy to see the good things that come from organizations working together to bless others. “Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” –Proverbs 11:25

God’s Present Hand

By | February 25th, 2015|Shelter|

God often uses “coincidences” to surprise us with his blessings and provision. Sometimes we don’t even noticed when these blessings happen. Other times, God’s hand in the matter is unquestionable. A married couple was scheduled to host at the shelter one night but their son’s high fever kept them from coming. While someone was checking in shelter guests, two of her friends from church showed up. They were under the impression they were scheduled to host that night. Thanks to this “coincidental” misunderstanding, the shelter had hosts and the situation was stress-less! “The heavens are telling of the glory of God, and their expanse is declaring the work of his hands.” –Psalm 19:1

An Accomplished Project

By | February 23rd, 2015|Shelter|

After several months of planning and construction, the Love INC women’s shelter has a new bathroom! The project first started in August with a meeting with the Home Builders Foundation, and concluded in December. Love INC has been wanting this addition for over a year, so it is such a blessing to have the project completed. Shelter guests are also excited to have the beautiful new bathroom. While the rest of the construction projects are still underway, Love INC is happy to see progress. Love INC is looking forward to completing the next set of projects on the floors, cabinets, counters, and more!  “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” –Psalm 127:1
